Here is what we learned about this PROJECT BIKE’S Maintenance needs after doing our own thorough diagnostic evaluation.
1. There is oil weeping from the left-side cylinder head (“aggressively,” according to our tech). This head is not the original part. According to the bike's previous owner, it is a used part that was installed in 2019 when a spark plug seized in the original cylinder head and could not be successfully extracted. (Apparently part of a chain of unfortunate issues related to work done by one unqualified mechanic!) Anyway, the head will need to be removed, checked, and resealed properly.
2. There is an indicated ABS failure. The brake system is working properly however, and when the system is checked with the BMW diagnostics computer, a fault code found says, “Low Brake Fluid Level” – meaning the ABS reservoir may just be below minimum and need refilling. No code for “ABS Failure” is shown. Standard I-ABS service would most likely resolve the issue.
3. The low-beam headlight bulb on the right side is out and needs to be replaced.
4. Both tires show unusual wear/cupping. There is still sufficient tread, but we recommend replacing them.

We checked many other things too, of course, and some deserve special mention (mostly good news here). We have just installed a NEW FUEL PUMP and a NEW REAR WHEEL FLANGE on this bike. You’re welcome. The steering head bearings and ball joints feel good and will pass Maryland inspection. All brake pads and rotors are also good to pass inspection. The front fork dust seals, on the other hand, have become dry and cracked, but they’re NOT leaking. Plan to replace them soon, but it’s not immediately necessary.

Summary: we predict that this R1200 RT PROJECT BIKE will turn out to be a very satisfying project — for the right lucky buyer, a lot of Future Fun in a Value-Priced Package. Don’t let it get away!
